Calcutta High Court Slaps INR 4 Lakh Alimony Order on Mohammad Shami

The Calcutta High Court has directed Indian cricketer Mohammad Shami to pay a monthly sum of INR 4 lakh to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan and their daughter. The order was passed by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee.

As per the court’s ruling, INR 1.5 lakh must be paid to Hasin Jahan for her personal expenses, while INR 2.5 lakh is meant for the care and upbringing of their daughter. This comes after the district sessions court’s 2023 order, which had fixed maintenance at INR 50,000 for Jahan and INR 80,000 for their daughter.

The Calcutta High Court noted that Mohammad Shami, being an international cricketer, can afford to pay a higher amount.

Calcutta High Court Orders Mohammad Shami to Pay INR 4 Lakh Monthly Alimony to Hasin Jahan

Hasin Jahan had initially requested INR 10 lakh per month, INR 7 lakh for herself and INR 3 lakh for their daughter, filing a plea against the district court's order. While the High Court did not agree to the full demand, it agreed that the earlier figure was too low.

"In my considered opinion, a sum of Rs. 1,50,000/- per month to the petitioner no.1(wife) and Rs. 2,50,000/- to her daughter would be just fair and reasonable to ensure financial stability for both the petitioners…" the court said as quoted in its order on July 1.

The court gave Shami the option to contribute more voluntarily toward his daughter’s education or additional needs, if he wishes to do so.

How the Dispute Unfolded Over the Years?

Hasin Jahan and Shami got married in 2014. Before their marriage, Jahan worked as a model and was also a cheerleader for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Their daughter was born in 2015.

In 2018, Jahan publicly accused Shami of domestic violence, dowry harassment and even match-fixing. She alleged that Shami had received money from a Pakistani woman and had cut off her access to funds for running the household.

The accusations were serious enough for the BCCI to temporarily withhold Shami’s central contract. However, after an internal inquiry, the board cleared him of any match-fixing charges, and he was reinstated.
