Joseph Edward Root is a top-order right-handed batsman and occasional off-spinner who plays for the England national team.
Root was born on 30 December 1990 to Matt Root and Helen Root. Matt Root was a club cricketer at Sheffield Collegiate and later he became a medical representative. His mother was a nurse in Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital. He also has a younger brother named Billy Root who plays cricket for Glamorgan.
Root was enrolled into Dore Primary School in Sheffield and later joined King Ecgbert School in Dore, Sheffield where he completed his secondary education. Root was already playing cricket while in school but when he joined Worksop College, he honed his skills under proper coaching to become a better cricketer. Back when he was a kid, he joined the Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club and later made his way into Yorkshire Academy, slowly gaining ground through their youth system.
Root joined the Yorkshire County Cricket Club at an early age and continued to progress through their ranks to make it to first-class debut at Headingly against Essex in the final match of Yorkshire’s Pro40 series. Yorkshire failed to win the trophy but he was excellent with 63 runs and was their top scorer. In April 2011, he made his County Championship debut against Worcestershire at New Road. He continued to play for Yorkshire and was one of their top batsmen.
Root made his international debuts in all three formats against India in India. He made his Test debut at Nagpur on 13 December 2012. He scored 73 runs off 229 balls in a match that was drawn. He made his T20I debut a few days later on 22 December 2012 at Wankhede. He did get the chance to bat in that match.
On 11 January 2013, he made his ODI debut at Rajkot and again did not bat in the match. He was appointed as the Test captain for England in February 2017 after Alaistar Cook stepped down. His first Test match as a captain was on 6 July 2017 against South Africa at Lord’s. He scored 190 in that match, playing a huge skipper’s knock and became the sixth English cricketer to score a Test century on captaincy debut. He resigned from the position on 15 April 2022 after being their Test captain for 64 games.
Root did not have a proper IPL career like some of his peers. He was bought by Rajasthan Royals in the 2023 auction for Rs 1 crore and he played only 3 matches, barely being able to make any lasting impression. He was released ahead of the 2024 season and did not play in the 2025 season as well. He has played for Trent Rockets in The Hundred, but he hasn’t participated in any other franchise, stating that he prioritizes national duty and Test cricket more.
Root suffered from a viral gastroenteritis during the 2018 Ashes and while it is not an injury, he retired during a match. He suffered from a broken thumb against West Indies in 2014 and was forced to withdraw from the upcoming ICC World T20 in Bangladesh. He also suffered from an injury to his little finger during a Test against India in 2024 but it wasn’t anything serious. Root maintains a strong fitness regimen and is known for his endurance, barely sustaining any major injuries during his career, which is a testament to his durability in the long run.
Root is married to Carrie Cotterell who was the manager of The Arc, a bar in Headingly, Leeds. They started dating around 2014 and got engaged in 2016. They tied the knot in December 2018 in Sheffield. Joe and Carrie had their first child in January 2018 - a son named Alfred Willaim Root. The couple had their second child, daughter Isabella Root, in July 2020.
Root’s net worth is estimated to be around £ 8 million (~Rs 92 crore). He currently has a 3-year central contract from England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) which earns him around £ 870K – 925K per year. He also has collaborated with a few brands such as Vitality, New Balance, and Brut. These deals are estimated to net him £1.6 million annually. His luxury home in Yorkshire coupled with his opulent car collection also add to his overall net worth.
Cricket is not the only sport that Root loves. He is also an ardent supporter of Sheffield United and takes to social media to talk about them. He is also into golf and himself is an amateur golf player. He is often seen playing video games with his teammates and loves listening to music to relax during his leisure or before matches. He is also a family man, often posting about his family and his dog on social media, expressing his love for them.
Root is also an advocate of charitable philanthropy. He has shown his support for youth cricket development, especially through the Chance to Shine event. He is also involved in fundraising for the Ruth Strauss Foundation, which is to support families with cancer. His fellow countryman Andrew Strauss is also involved with the same. He also has auctioned his match gear to raise money to support people during the COVID-19 pandemic.
